This week's photo - week 4 of 2012

The only thing happening here nowadays

Written on 01/30/2012 by Patrick Bregman

So yeah, my blog is still as dead as every, with the only thing that's happening here being the photo of the week posts. I hope that's gonna change soon, but I can't really promise anything. Anywho, let's stop this useless blabbering and get to the picture!

Kuroneko macro

Let me begin with that I should've really dusted off the figure before taking pictures, but I was too lazy to do that. What I do notice now is that there is some kind of weird hair or something in the top-left corner. I have no idea what that is, I hope it is somehow on the front or back element of the lens, 'cuz if it's on the sensor it's gonna be a bit harder to clean.

Anywho, what do we see here? We see Kuroneko (from the anime OreImo) on the foreground, and in the background we have a Strike Witches wallscroll, a load of figures and a lamp. I don't really like the background, there is too much there, but then again, I was only practicing with my new (second hand) Nikon D40. Why the **** did I buy it? Good question, the primary reason is the flash sync speed, it can use the flash and still have a shutter speed of 1/500 seconds (that's 0.002 seconds) where my Nikon D90 can only do it up to 1/200 seconds (that's 0.005 seconds). This about halves the time the sensor is exposed to light, so this should theoretically give macro shots with a deeper black in the background.

Why isn't this background black then? Well, the aperture was still kind of open, and the wall and figures were kinda close. Both were ~1.5 meters away, where I normally try to have at least 5 meters of empty space behind the figures. Also, the flash was mounted on the camera this time, instead of being a few centimeters above the figure. This means more light is gonna bounce back from the wall, which means a brighter background. The only downside I've been able to find for the Nikon D40 so far is that the build-in flash can't be used as a Nikon CLS commander, so no wireless flashing for now.

Well, that's the picture for this week. If you want something special to appear here next week, mention me on Twitter (@PatrickBregman) with your suggestion.
